Incredible sounding fuzz, the first I've ever owned personally. Had to get this one. Please understand, when I say "Pumpkins" tone during my video demo, I mean strictly the "Gish / Siamese Dream" era whereas later on Corgan and the Pumpkins relied heavily on amp distortion or other boxes. Still, if you love those early Pumpkins albums, this is THE one to get. It's a Siamese Dream in a box! apol...

      I'm on the blue channel exclusively (the red is far too saturated and kind of unusable). I have my bass at 7, the mids at 4 and trebles are cranked most of the way up. I can't remember if they are at 10 or 9, but somewhere in that range. It's a great amp!

      DUDE!!! Thank you so very much for your reply and for your help! Additionally I'm still trying to dial in my Envelope filter (Tim Mahoney)"Amber"/Champaign" sounds. I just purchased a "Keeley Neutrino" pedal as a guitar buddy recommended it as a waaay better pedal than the EH "Q" series pedals. and am having issues trying to match the sound. Any recommendations?

    Yeah, the new ones are great. lots of great upgrades to them. how is yours holding up? you humidify it?

    • @ia5662
      @ia5662 2 місяці тому

      It's holding up very well - I've humidified it since the beginning and recently invested in room humidifier for all my guitars that keeps it consistently at 50%. It went through a winter stretch where the binding was under/overhanging by like a fingernail and I humidified it a little more consistently and got rid of that. It's been a workhorse of a guitar and a complete tone machine.

    I know this vid is 12yrs old, but its nice to view a review video on a product that everyone has the sound in their head to compare against and not have the video poster just do their own riffs that are in some other realm of music other than the "sounds" we all have in our head. lol Everyone has to be a clown nowadays, or a "my own creative self" when you know damn well even they bought the pedal to recreate the iconic riffs. So thank you for actually demo'ng riffs of the actual "sounds" we really only care about for a pedal review (even if most wont admit this to themselves lmao)

    The HD12-28 actually doesn't have forward shifted scalloped bracing. Check out the official Martin specs.

    • @ia5662
      @ia5662 3 місяці тому

      Point noted - because I bought this used I went off the usual HD-28 specs which they clearly changed for this 12 string. A typical 6 string HD-28 always stands apart by using forward shifted scalloped bracing. My guess is by keeping the braced non-scalloped in the 12 string model they increase the integrity of the top, especially with twice the string pressure.

    Nice! I bought a Martin Custom D from musician's Friend about 6 yrs ago, only mine is mahogany back and sides and a sitca spruce top. I Love mine! Mine sounds a little different from yours. Might just be the strings or your mic. Mine has a warmer tone and to me mine sounds like butter and bells!

    • @ia5662
      @ia5662 4 місяці тому

      It's funny, you can watch my review of the Martin D-18 on my channel. I fully switched my sound to a mahogany instrument and it's such a woody, organic tone. I know exactly that model you mean. It used to be that Martin had the Mahogany Custom D for $799 I think and the Rosewood for $899 at the time of their inception. Might have $999, I can't remember. Both guitars are such great value being all solid woods and essentially poor man's D-18 and D-28's respectively. I personally loved the simplicity of the design appointments and the tortoise binding. One thing I'll say though is that without much finish on them (to save a lot of cash) they are very susceptible with weather and temperature changes. Mine was way off when I got it used - the previous owner had really dried out. I had to re-humidify it patiently and it took like 2 weeks to get it back to a playable action. Then I took it to Martin a they put a shim under the nut. I was blown away by how it played so evenly across the fretboard. But being in PA, going into winter and then into summer, I always had a bit of action issues and string slap. Take care of yours and it'll last you a very long time - congrats on that purchase.

    What gauge strings do you recommend for the HD1228, and the D1228. I love the medium strings. Is it ok to tune on E standard? Is this also true for vintage 1977 D1228?

    • @ia5662
      @ia5662 5 місяців тому

      I use .10s, it's pretty much all you should use if tuning to standard. 12 strings also sound really full and nice dropped to Eb, but I can never bring myself to do that. Because of the major tension caused by an extra set of strings pulling on the top and bridge, most suggest the .10 gauge. It's light, but keep in mind every note is doubled so it still sounds full. I'm sure there are heavier gauges to try, but most people would detune those and then capo up for standard E tuning.

    I know its been literally 12 years but do you remember the amp settings you used?

    • @ia5662
      @ia5662 5 місяців тому

      It would have been probably a 7 on the bass, 4 on the mid, and 10 on trebles. The amp itself was quite mid-rangey which is why I got rid of it, but in the context of a band it was great. Clean channel was amazing - but some people really chase that tone and it works for them, I like a more scooped sound personally and switched to a 5150 III head

    The sustain on that beast is awesome ! It sounds like it's going to jump right out of your hands ! My shopping is done. I was tring to decide between a J16e a Guild D1512 and a Gibson J45 12. This Martin blows the others out of the water. No comparisons...at all.

    • @ia5662
      @ia5662 6 місяців тому

      I absolutely love Guild 12s, they are the masters of that particular style of guitar, but I do think this Martin has something else in it that the others do not. I played 2 different lower priced Guild 12s before I settled on this and I'm extremely happy. It's an exquisite instrument and the most valuable one I own.

    Reset the neck .. fairly easy if it's a bolt on with a glued fingerboard..just need an iron to soften the glue ... If it's a mortise bolt on it will have a wooden plate covering the bolt up against the neck block .its just on with double stick tape.. Plenty of luthiers showing you how to do it on UA-cam... It being a cheaper guitar makes it a good candidate for you to do it yourself.

    • @ia5662
      @ia5662 7 місяців тому

      Hey Chris - I would always recommend playing all those models in person. The D-16 is a more D28 style but stripped down with that matte finish. I have not played either of those Yamaha's but they always offer great value in their guitars. I think the D-16E is a great value for getting all solid woods including fretboard and bridge.

      Hello, at the latest it was early 90s I believe, but whenever they ran the power supply out of the pedal itself as a plug, that's what era you are looking for. I believe they did that all the way though the 80s on this particular model and some of the 90s before they switched over to an AC plug style like today's pedals have.
